Attestation of documents
Indian degrees, diplomas, school certificates, etc. are attested by the High Commission only after they have been attested by the competent authority of the State concerned and then by the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi. Documents issued by Tanzanian authorities must first be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tanzania.
Documents required:
- Miscellaneous services application form, fully filled in, with one photograph pasted
- Current passport and residence permit, in original, with self-attested copies
- The document to be attested, in original, with a copy
Sworn affidavit (for issue or renewal of a child's passport in India)

Power of Attorney
The Power of Attorney must be signed in person before the Consular Officer.

Police clearance certificate

Birth or marriage certificate
- Miscellaneous services application form, fully filled in, with one photograph pasted
- Current passport and residence permit, in original, with self-attested copies
The certificate is issued on the basis of the personal particulars printed in the passport.
Bachelorhood certificate
The High Commission does not issue bachelorhood certificates. If the applicant has a bachelorhood or eligibility-for-marriage certificate issued by a court in India and attested by the Consular Division of the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi, the High Commission can attest the Ministry's seal. For personal affidavits or declarations, the High Commission only stamps the paper and takes no responsibility for its contents.

NRI certificate
- Miscellaneous services application form, completed in all respects
- Current and previous passports covering the whole period of stay in Tanzania for which the certificate is needed, and the residence permit, in original, with self-attested copies
- A declaration that the applicant has not stayed in India for more than 182 days in the previous financial year(s)
- To include a son's or daughter's name in the certificate, a copy of the child's passport
Renunciation of Indian citizenship and surrender of the Indian passport
Persons of Indian origin who acquire foreign citizenship must surrender their Indian passport to the nearest Indian Mission or Post immediately afterwards. The Citizenship Act does not allow dual citizenship; an OCI card is not dual citizenship.
- Holding, obtaining or travelling on an Indian passport after acquiring foreign citizenship is an offence under the Passports Act, 1967, and attracts penalties.
- The Indian passport must be surrendered within 90 days of obtaining the foreign naturalisation certificate or document, even if the foreign passport is obtained later.
- The Government of India imposes graded penalties depending on the number of trips made on the Indian passport after acquiring foreign nationality, and for keeping the Indian passport for more than three years after acquiring foreign nationality.
- The fee for surrender / renunciation differs from case to case.
Anyone who has acquired, or intends to acquire, foreign nationality may contact the High Commission for clarification.

I did not surrender my Indian passport. How do I get a Surrender Certificate?
If you acquired foreign nationality before 1 June 2010 and have your last Indian passport in original:
- Miscellaneous services application form, completed in all respects
- Current passport and residence permit, in original, with self-attested copies
- Naturalisation / registration certificate from the Government of Tanzania
- A letter explaining why the passport was not surrendered earlier
If you acquired foreign nationality after 1 June 2010: the same documents, but with the renunciation form instead of the miscellaneous services form.
I have only a photocopy or the particulars of my Indian passport. Can I get a Surrender Certificate?
No, if you acquired foreign nationality before 1 June 2010. Yes, if you acquired it after 1 June 2010. In both cases submit:
- A notarised sworn affidavit explaining why the original passport is not available, stating that you did not keep the Indian passport for more than three years, and did not travel on it beyond the three-month grace period, after acquiring foreign nationality. The application is considered for OCI only after the passport details are verified with the issuing authority.
- If foreign nationality was acquired after 1 June 2010, a renunciation declaration
- Current passport
- Naturalisation / registration certificate from the Government of Tanzania
I acquired foreign nationality before 1 June 2010 and surrendered my Indian passport to the Immigration Office in Tanzania, but have no proof.
